Decorate your home and benefit from clean air with houseplants! The NASA Clean Air Study found that many common indoor plants provide a natural way to remove toxins from the air, including benzene, formaldehyde, trichloroethylene & more (chemicals often found in cleaners). Learn about nine plants that will make your home more attractive and give you cleaner air.

Peace Lily – This beautiful houseplant is not only easy to care for – it also benefits as an air cleaner for your home. It is considered one of the top indoor plants for purifying air because it breaks down and neutralizes toxic gases, including benzene, formaldehyde, and carbon monoxide. NASA even revealed that Peace Lily is the most efficient indoor houseplant for removing airborne Volatile Compounds. This tropical plant has an occasional white bloom and requires only water and a little light to remain healthy.

Dracaena – All varieties of dracaena are also useful for air cleaning. Red-Edged Dracaena is a low maintenance plant that is efficient at removing formaldehyde, benzene, trichlorethylene, and xylene from the air. This plant is an upright tropical plant that simply needs indirect sunlight and moistened soil to stay alive.

Aloe Vera – Another easy-to-grow plant, Aloe Vera is a succulent that helps clean the air of formaldehyde and benzene. This plant loves the sun, so keep it near a sunny window in your home. Bonus: Besides being a great air-cleaner, the inside of aloe vera is also excellent for healing cuts, burns, and sunburns.

Philodendron – Philodendron varieties, such as Heartleaf, Selloum, and Elephant Ear, are great houseplants for removing formaldehyde (commonly found in particle board). The unique coloring of philodendron makes it an attractive plant to decorate your home with, while it is also easy to care for and requires very little attention.

Dieffenbachia – Dieffenbachia, or Dumb Cane, is a stunning houseplant that requires light and well-drained soil. This plant’s foliage helps remove toxins from the air, including xylene, to offer you and your family members clean breathing air in your home.

Snake Plant – Sansevieria, referred to as Snake Plant, is a striking houseplant that can improve your home’s air quality. It absorbs airborne toxins such as formaldehyde, nitrogen oxide, benzene, trichloroethylene, and xylene. According to NASA, this indoor house plant is also one of the best for cleaning the air. This low-maintenance plant prefers to have plenty of bright light but can also survive with low amounts of light.

Pothos – Pothos is a common hanging, climbing plant that is easy to grow in your home. This plant features heart-shaped leaves and benefits as an air cleaner for your indoor space. Plus, Pothos can even help relax the eyes when they are irritated or if you’re congested.

English Ivy – English Ivy is a popular houseplant that cleanses benzene, formaldehyde, xylene, and toluene from the air. Additionally, it can also help reduce mold and airborne fecal particles (gross… or great!). This plant is easy to care for – just keep it at a constant temperature with plenty of sunlight and water.
