Our story
1935
Frank and Grace Moot founded Sunnyside Gardens, selling plants, cut flowers, and homegrown tomatoes at local farmers markets.
1940s-1950s
These were the decades of bedding plants, potted roses, and giant dahlias. In 1960, the garden center expanded with a couple of new buildings, making room for more offerings and an ever-growing community of gardeners.
1970s
Frank’s son, Jerry, took the helm as the next generation to lead the business.
1988
Mike Hurley joined the Sunnyside team, starting with everyday garden center tasks like carrying plants to customers’ cars. He quickly developed a passion for plants and the outdoor lifestyle. Throughout the 1990s, Mike worked closely with Jerry, learning both the horticultural side and the operations of the garden center.
2000
Mike purchased Sunnyside Gardens from Jerry Moot, becoming the first owner outside of the Moot family.
2005
The garden center expanded again, introducing trees and shrubs. What had once been extra perennial-growing space became a thriving shrub yard, reflecting customer demand for more diverse landscapes.
2009
With just three employees and a truck, Sunnyside launched its Fine Gardening, Custom Container Design, and Landscape Design & Build services. These divisions have since grown into fully staffed teams with more than a dozen trucks, proudly extending our reach beyond the garden center.
2018
Inspired by a love of beauty and outdoor living, Sunnyside introduced Trill Boutique, our lifestyle and gifting shop named for our “true and real” philosophy.
2020 and beyond
Today, Sunnyside Gardens continues to thrive as Minneapolis’ premier garden center, blending plants, design, and lifestyle. With a legacy rooted in exceptional service and a passion for beautiful spaces, we’re proud to keep growing with our community.
