Ornamental backyard fun

I have a teeny-weeny backyard with one enormous oak tree.

Question:

I have a teeny-weeny backyard with one enormous oak tree. Really, enormous. It shades parts of the yard back there, but there is sun, too.

I think I would like to plant a tree in the back — I\’d love to plant an ornamental crab tree or maybe a red berry tree. (Winterberry?) Anyway, does an ornamental tree have a chance in a teeny-weeny backyard where the alpha tree is ENORMOUS? How much light do they need? ?submitted=true?submitted=true?submitted=true

Answer:

Hi Mo,

Well, the competition for water may make for a quite a challenge in getting the new tree established.  If you have a half day light you can grow a smaller stature crabapple tree or we like to suggest the snowball viburnum tree for its adaptability to low light.

If you are interested in making a go of it, be sure to amend your soil quite well with a planting compost and fertilize with a root stimulator.
