Christmas Tree Care: How to Keep Your Tree Fresh

Bringing home a real Christmas tree is one of the most joyful rituals of the season. After wandering the tree lot, finding the one, and giving it a celebratory spin, a little care goes a long way in keeping your tree fresh, fragrant, and beautiful through the holidays.

Here’s how to give your Christmas tree the best possible start—and keep it thriving from day one to the final ornament.

Step One: Start With a Fresh Cut

Before your tree leaves the lot, give your Sunnyside salesperson the OK to trim 2–3 inches off the bottom of the trunk. This step is essential.

A fresh cut exposes open capillaries in the trunk, allowing your tree to properly take up water. If the trunk dries out—even briefly—those pathways can seal with sap, making it much harder for your tree to stay hydrated.

Step Two: Water Quickly (and Generously)

Once your tree is cut, get it into water within 45 minutes. This is one of the most important steps in tree care.

Expect your tree to be especially thirsty during the first 24–48 hours. During that time:

  • Check the water level frequently
  • Refill before bed, before leaving for the day, and whenever you return home
  • Never allow the water level to drop below the base of the trunk

A well-hydrated tree not only looks better—it also retains needles longer and maintains that classic holiday fragrance.

Warm Water Works Best

We recommend using warm water, especially during the first few days. Warm water helps soften sap and encourages better water uptake, keeping your tree fresher for longer.

You may also choose to add a trusted tree preservative, such as Prolong, which can help maintain needle softness and overall freshness throughout the season.

A Few Extra Tips for Success

  • Use a sturdy stand that holds plenty of water
  • Keep your tree away from heat sources like radiators or fireplaces
  • Check water daily—real trees drink more than you expect
