Ready to get started? Here’s everything you need to know about when, where, and how to plant bulbs for the best results.

When & Where to Plant

Timing is key!
Plant bulbs when soil temperatures are cool—around 40–50°F—and at least six weeks before the ground freezes. This gives bulbs time to establish roots before winter sets in, without sprouting too early.

Bulbs thrive in well-draining soil and full sun, so avoid areas where water tends to collect. If you’re planting in heavy clay, mix in compost, peat moss, or other organic matter to improve drainage.

How to Plant (Step-by-Step)

1. Prepare the Soil

Loose, rich soil helps bulbs establish quickly. Clear away rocks, weeds, and debris, then mix in compost or peat moss for nutrients. For an extra boost, add a bulb fertilizer like Espoma Bulb-tone or bone meal.
Sunnyside Tip: Sprinkle an animal repellent such as Repellex in the hole and over the top to deter squirrels and chipmunks.

2. Dig the Hole

A good rule of thumb: plant bulbs three times as deep as the bulb is tall.
Planting too deep may delay or prevent blooming; too shallow, and the bulb could be damaged by frost.

3. Place the Bulb

Set each bulb pointy side up, then gently cover with soil. Lightly press the soil to remove air pockets—but don’t compact it too tightly.

4. Water Thoroughly

After planting, water deeply to help roots start forming. Continue watering occasionally until the ground freezes.

5. Protect Your Plantings

If critters are a concern, cover the area with chicken wire and a light layer of gravel or mulch. This keeps pests out while helping regulate temperature and moisture through winter.
