How to Care for a Minnesota Favorite: The Peony

peony, shrub, perennial, garden center

Peonies are one of Minnesota’s most beloved garden plants—and for good reason. They’re long-lived, cold-hardy, and reward gardeners with lush foliage and unforgettable blooms each spring and early summer. With proper care, these perennials can thrive for decades!

Here’s how to care for peonies in Minnesota gardens.

Perennial Peonies

Perennial peonies are the traditional garden favorites many of us grew up with. They die back to the ground each fall and re-emerge reliably every spring.

Light & Placement

  • Full sun is best (at least 6 hours per day)
  • Some afternoon shade is acceptable, but too much shade reduces blooms
  • Allow plenty of space for airflow to prevent disease

Planting Depth Matters

  • Peony “eyes” should be planted no deeper than 1–2 inches below soil level
  • Planting too deeply is the most common reason peonies fail to bloom

Watering & Feeding

  • Water deeply during dry periods, especially in spring and early summer
  • Once established, peonies are fairly drought tolerant
  • A light application of compost or balanced fertilizer in spring is sufficient

Seasonal Care

  • Deadhead spent blooms for a tidy appearance
  • Cut foliage back to the ground in fall to prevent disease
  • Avoid moving plants—peonies prefer to stay put and improve with age

Winter Care for Minnesota Gardens

Peonies are extremely cold hardy and well suited to Minnesota winters.

  • Mulch lightly after the ground freezes
  • Avoid heavy fall pruning
  • Snow cover is beneficial and provides insulation
