Thinking about adding new shrubs to your landscape?
Planting shrubs is one of the best ways to bring lasting structure, color, and texture to your yard. With the right timing, placement, and care, your shrubs will thrive for years to come. Here’s how to get started.

WHERE TO PLANT SHRUBS

Choose a shrub that suits your space. Make sure the sunlight, soil, and water needs of your plant match your chosen location. Consider how your shrub will grow over time—both tall and wide—and give it room to mature without crowding power lines, walkways, or walls.
Before digging, remember to check for underground utilities. Proper placement now means less pruning and maintenance later.

WHEN TO PLANT SHRUBS

The best time to plant shrubs in Minnesota is early spring or fall. Cooler temperatures and consistent moisture make it easier for roots to establish before the extremes of winter or summer.
You can typically plant through mid-October or early November, depending on the weather—but don’t wait too long! Shrubs need time to develop strong roots before the ground freezes.

HOW TO PLANT SHRUBS

  1. Dig a hole twice as wide and just as deep as the shrub’s root ball. On a slope, level the area so the roots sit evenly.
  2. Remove the plant from its pot and check the root ball. If roots are circling, loosen them gently or cut an “X” into the bottom to encourage new growth.
  3. Set the shrub in the hole with the top of the root ball level to the soil surface, positioning its best side toward the main view.
  4. Backfill with amended soil. Mix compost or organic matter into the soil you removed for added nutrients.
  5. Feed and water well. Add a starter fertilizer such as Quick Start, then water deeply to settle the soil and eliminate air pockets.
