Winter Houseplant Care: 5 Seasonal Tips for Minnesota

winter tips, houseplant care, houseplants, indoor plants, instructions

As winter settles in and daylight fades, our houseplants feel the seasonal shift right along with us. Growth slows, watering needs change, and a little extra intention goes a long way in keeping plants healthy through the colder months.

The good news? Winter houseplant care doesn’t require anything complicated—just a few thoughtful adjustments. Here are our essential tips to help your plants rest, recharge, and thrive until spring.

1. Embrace the Seasonal Slowdown

During winter, most houseplants naturally enter a period of rest. You may notice:

  • Slower growth
  • Fewer new leaves
  • Occasional leaf drop

This is completely normal. Resist the urge to “fix” your plant with extra water, fertilizer, or repotting—less is more this time of year.

2. Prioritize Light (Without Stressing Plants)

Shorter days mean less natural light, especially in Minnesota.

  • Place plants near bright windows, ideally south– or west-facing
  • Rotate pots every few weeks for even growth
  • Avoid cold drafts or direct contact with icy glass

If light is limited, many common houseplants will still do just fine—they’ll simply grow more slowly.

3. Adjust Your Watering Routine

Plants use less water in winter. Overwatering is the most common issue we see this time of year.

  • Always check soil moisture before watering
  • Let excess water drain fully—never let plants sit in standing water
  • Water less frequently, but thoroughly

4. Hold Off on Fertilizer

Because plants aren’t actively growing, fertilizer isn’t necessary in winter. Feeding now can stress roots and lead to weak growth. Resume regular feeding in spring when daylight increases.

5. Be Mindful of Indoor Conditions

Heated homes can be dry and drafty:

  • Keep plants away from heat vents and radiators
  • Group plants together to create a more humid microclimate
  • Wipe dust off leaves so they can photosynthesize efficiently

A Gentle Reminder

Winter is a season of rest—for plants and people alike. With a little patience and observation, your houseplants will come through winter healthy and ready to grow when spring returns.
