Easy Care Houseplants

Keeping houseplants is an excellent way to add life to your home or office, but not all of us have the green thumb to keep them alive.

Keeping houseplants is an excellent way to add life to your home or office, but not all of us have the green thumb to keep them alive. Here is a list of easy-to-care-for houseplants that will add some green and help clean the air indoors.

Aspidistra elatior (cast iron plant) – This plant features long, pointed, oval-shaped leaves which emerge from the soil. Cast iron plant grows up to two feet tall and is available either solid green or variegated. Drought, low light, cold drafts, and dust are not a problem for this hard-to-kill plant.

Dracaena fragrans or D. deremensis ‘Janet Craig’ or ‘Warneckii’ – Dracaenas are tall, upright plants with long, shiny, pointed leaves. The ‘Warneckii’ dracaenas have light green leaves with a dark green stripe down the middle, while ‘Janet Craig’ has solid green leaves. These plants can handle drought and moderate indoor light. Dracaenas are sensitive to fluoride, so if you water with tap water, let the water sit out uncovered for a day to allow the fluoride to dissipate.

Epipremnum aureum (pothos) – Pothos is a trailing or climbing houseplant which works well in a hanging basket or trained on a trellis. This vine-like plant is available with solid green or variegated green, yellow, and white foliage. If the stems get too long, they can be cut back to just a few inches. Cuttings will root readily in water or soil. Pothos can tolerate low light and drought with few issues.

Philodendron scandens oxycardium (heartleaf philodendron) – This philodendron is very similar to pothos in both form and hardiness. There are many different philodendrons available as houseplants, but this one is the easiest to care for. Great in a hanging basket or trained on a support, heartleaf philodendron makes an excellent addition to any houseplant collection.

Sansevieria (mother-in-law’s tongue, snake plant) – Sansevieria is one of the best-known, hard-to-kill houseplants. This plant has tall, thick leaves which stick straight out of the soil and, depending on variety, can grow between just a few inches and three feet tall. The leaves are generally green and mottled with white, but can be striped or solid as well.

Zamioculcas zamiafolia (ZZ plant) – ZZ plant is a fun, unique houseplant that has tall, thick, arching stems which hold thick, shiny, green leaves. These plants can grow up to two feet tall. As another hard-to-kill plant, ZZ plants can tolerate drought and low light with ease.
