Remember to think about the herb properties when picking it’s summer home.  For example:

-Chives thrive in the ground and will over winter year after year.  So in ground is great!

-Basil is just wonderful to eat and cook with, so plant it like you’ve got an Italian restaurant to supply.  It does great in the ground or in a container.  Whenever I really want something to grow well for me I plant in the ground or in a very large pot so there’s extra room for the roots to seek out water.

-Cilantro is divine in and on Mexican food and salsas.  I heard I should be mixing it in my vitamix for spic and span kidneys–Keep em squeaky!! Plant cilantro in bunches in containers where you can watch it for getting over watered or under watered.  The trick is to just let it dry on top before reintroducing water to the pot.

-Sage is wonderful on pork and steak.  Besides looking great on your fork it can look really cool tucked in and growing with your summer annuals.  The foliage is usually very colorful and the texture will be a great addition.  (If you want it to come back every year try planting it in the ground.)
