Herb Care

Choosing herbs for your garden can be quite a pleasant chore.

Choosing herbs for your garden can be quite a pleasant chore.

If you’re gardening with herbs to accentuate your cooking, you will want to select some of the staples like Basil, Thyme, Oregano, Dill, Marjoram, Stevia, Rosemary and Tarragon.

In general, herbs like full sun and quite a bit of space to grow and spread out.  In some cases where your garden bed doesn’t get direct sunlight or if you may not have ample space to grow we suggest container growing your herbs. Container gardening with herbs will allow you to get the most out of your plants.  You can begin your containers indoors when the temperatures haven’t gotten warm enough, then you can move the plants outdoors to the best location for sun and care when the time is right.

Potted Mint

Growing Mint in a container will help you keep the lovely, but invasive plant at bay.  When let go wild in free in a garden Mint WILL take over spaces and become a bit of a pain.

Herb selections with the best aromatic qualities are Lavender, Catnip, Lemon Verbena,

Lemon Balm and Sage.  When dried, these plants make lovely arrangements or additions to potpourii sachets.

To dry long stemmed herbs, gather them into small bunches, toes the ends together and hang the bunches upside down in a dim well ventilated location.
