The DIY Landscaper, Part I

Late summer and fall are the best times to do your perennial planting.

Pink Monarda (Bee Balm)

Late summer and fall are the best times to do your perennial planting. Not to mention, with cooler temperatures it makes getting that landscape project done more enjoyable! Our staff and landscape designers have teamed up to provide you with ideas, elements and tips to guide you to landscaping success!

The very first thing you want to take a look at in your yard is what kind of sun or shade the area in your yard gets during the day. Determining the amount of sun or shade your yard is crucial to decide which plants will thrive. Many homes in the area have mature trees in their yard, providing part sun or part shade conditions. These conditions are great because plants that prefer full sun or full shade will usually tolerate the part sun/shade conditions.

For full sun areas try a couple of the following plants:

Bee Balm
Dianthus
Shasta Daisy
Coreopsis
Calamagrostis ‘Karl Foerster’ (grass)

Part-Sun to Shade:

Jacob’s Ladder
Hostas
Brunerra
Heuchera
Hakonechloa ‘All Gold’ (grass)

There are more options than what is provided here. We would encourage you to visit us to see our whole selection of perennials. Questions? Any one of our Perennial Experts would be happy to assist you when you stop in, or give us a call!
