What’s Blooming in August

Russian Sage has it's day in the sun.

Perovskia atriplicifolia in garden bed

Russian Sage has it’s day in the sun.

Has anyone seen the Russian Sage in color out in the landscape?  Russian Sage is the 3 foot tall, silver, shrubby plant with purple flower tips.  This silver foliage is unique to these sages (and some artemesia) and will stand out in a border planting.  It’s not a shrub, but can hold the place of a 3ft x 3ft space in your garden.  Size matters when you think about how different areas handle the MN seasons. Where big may be good option for summer, big maybe isn’t good for winter shoveling strategy -snow pack during winter.  Russian sage die back to the ground after the first frost, so you can get the height and color without worrying about smushing it with your toboggan.  Russian sage looks great along side the blooming Black-Eyed Susans and Echinacea–it’s reminiscent of the wild sage that grows in the mountains out in Colorado.
