As winter fades and spring approaches, it’s time to start thinking about lawn care. A well-maintained lawn in early spring sets the stage for healthy growth throughout the season. Here are essential steps to kickstart a vibrant, green lawn this year.

1. Apply Spring Fertilizer for a Healthy Start

Early spring is the perfect time to give your lawn a nutrient boost. A balanced spring fertilizer helps promote strong root development and encourages lush, green growth. Be sure to apply it according to the package instructions and water it in for proper absorption.

2. Water in Treatments for Best Results

If you’re applying fertilizers or pre-emergent weed control, watering them in ensures they penetrate the soil effectively. A light soaking helps activate these treatments and supports your lawn’s recovery from winter dormancy.

3. Be Gentle—Avoid Aggressive Raking

Hold off on raking until your grass is actively growing. Raking too early can tear out dormant grass, damage fragile new shoots and hibernating pollinators. Instead, lightly remove leaves and debris to allow sunlight and air circulation to reach the soil.

4. Spot Seed to Fill in Bare Patches

Winter can leave behind thin or bare spots in your lawn. Early spring is a great time for spot seeding, but be mindful of other lawn treatments. If using crabgrass preventer, seed first and wait until the new grass is at least 1-2 inches tall before applying, or be prepared to delay seeding for four months after using the preventer.

5. Crabgrass Prevention: Timing Is Key

Applying a pre-emergent herbicide helps stop crabgrass before it starts. However, avoid planting new grass within four months of application, as it can prevent desirable seeds from germinating too. If you’re seeding, plan accordingly to get the best results for both weed prevention and lawn growth.
